Share an Idea – Christchurch City Council
A word from the mayor on the award:
Many thanks for this award on behalf of the people of Christchurch. It recognises the work of our Council and our talented staff as we work to recover from a series of devastating earthquakes over the past year.
The Share an Idea project was designed not only to collect and process the best ideas from our people, it was also designed to replace our sense of powerlessness in the face of the earthquakes that shattered our city.
Our community’s vision provided all of us with a vision that gave us a reason to have hope. Hope for ourselves and our descendants that we would again have a city that would sustain us and our descendants in a way that the city we had just lost had done.
Our people have designed a city that is not only going to the safest in the world it will be a city that reflects the real needs of the 21st century – sustainable, green and low rise – a city that most of all will be a city for people.
Next year after just nine months of preparation we will begin the task of rebuilding the centre of Christchurch. We will breathe life into the vision created in cooperation between the Christchurch City Council and its people - truly an example of co-creation.
Do come visit some time. Our city is in a beautiful island with mountains, lakes, beaches and unspoilt beauty and at its heart will rise a new city of Christchurch.
Again thank you from the people of Christchurch for your recognition.
Kind regards
Bob Parker, Mayor of Christchurch, New Zealand
